The
NORVANE works on a servo-pendulum system, which is generally accepted
as being the most efficient means
of self steering. It is completely mechanical, powered only by
wind & water
and uses the vessel’s existing steering system to steer the
boat. It does not need any electricity therefore will not flatten
your batteries. The NORVANE is strong and powerful and can steer
the vessel better than most helmsmen in all weather conditions.
In fact the harder it blows the better it works
The NORVANE is easy to operate. It connects to the steering system
by means of lines running from the unit to the tiller or wheel.
Once the sails are trimmed and the boat is balanced and set on
the desired course, the NORVANE is engaged; when the boat wonders
off course (or the apparent wind shifts) the change in the apparent
wind, plus the action on the servo-rudder by the water flowing
past the hull, activates the NORVANE to return the boat back on
track.
The NORVANE is a stainless steel, wind powered, servo-pendulum
wind vane, developed with the following objectives:

“Do it yourself” easy installation and simple operation
•
Maximum sensitivity, low friction and extra smooth performance.
For this we have included an adjustable counter-weight; glass balled,
balled bearings on the wind train; and stainless steel balled bearings,
housed in Delrin ball races on the servo system.

Minimum corrosion and maintenance free. Almost the entire unit
is made from electro-polished, investment cast, type 316 stainless
steel. Castings are virtually unbreakable. In using this process
we have eliminated all structural welds as we have seen that on
other vanes where welding is used there is always corrosion. All
tubing, fittings & fastenings are stainless steel and are readily
available.

No concealed lines. All moving parts are visible and easily accessible,
even underway.

Other unique features include an adjustable counter-weight; the
servo-rudder being able to swing up 180° out of the water when
not in use; and a built in square socket drive for an emergency
tiller.
